Technology
Technology integration involves using computers effectively and efficiently in the core content areas of math, science, reading and social studies to allow students to learn how to apply computer skills and technology in meaningful ways. Instructional technology redefines the traditional teacher-student relationship. Students take responsibility for and become engaged in their own learning. Instruction moves from a teacher-centered model to student-centered, where the teacher serves as a guide and the curriculum drives the use of technology. In other words, integrating technology goes far beyond using word processing software or supplementing a lesson with a PowerPoint presentation.
At Lake Erie Academy, teachers implement instructional technology through the utilization of data projectors and document cameras that provide large image displays on classroom whiteboards. Large image displays enable every student the opportunity to visualize academic content, comprehend information and enhance learning outcomes. When teachers effectively integrate technology into their classroom practice, learners are empowered by active engagement in their learning – students who are instructed with technology are more likely to retain information and develop a deeper understanding of concepts.
Staff professional development is supported by ongoing implementation of professional learning via webinars, as well as on and off site training. Professional development efforts include teachers’ proficient integration of technology in the classroom, as well as technology usage on the school website, creating teacher web pages and maintaining student data.
